Fever Pitch by Heidi Cullinan: Review, Excerpt, and Giveaway!!!

~Penny’s Rating: A ~ So. Many. Feels. Yes, this is a love story – and the romance side of Heidi Cullinan’s latest “new adult” novel Fever Pitch is awesome, and adorable. It’s even angsty and intense. We get to see Walter and Kelly again, and think about the songs in Frozen, and there are a Capella singing groups up the wazoo! More than all of that, this book is about doing what you love. Do what you love. It’s never that simple or easy is it? But there is hope, and this book reminded me of what I love. What I love is music. Singing. I am a vocalist, a performer, an artist, a writer, masquerading as an office manager.  No matter how good I am at my job, it feels like a half-life. This book is like my young adulthood. I went to a conservatory at a university, and I feel like I got to re-live a bit of that with this book. The love of music, the passion, and utter joy that Cullinan’s character’s experience through their artistry, I feel like Cullinan captured it perfectly. I miss singing every damn day. I really do. So much that it’s a physical…

Unjustified Claims: Hidden Wolves Book 3 by Kaje Harper

~Penny’s Rating: B+ ~ Kaje Harper is an author I have been meaning to post about for a while now, because I really enjoy her work. The first two books in the Hidden Wolves series, Unacceptable Risk, and Unexpected Demands are fantastic, and if you have not read them, I highly recommend that you do so before tackling Unjustified Claims. There are also a couple of free short stories in the series as well. You can check out Harper’s complete body of work here. So why Hidden Wolves? First of all, the series takes place in Minnesota! Yay home state! The novels in this series are hefty and satisfying – Harper tends to write longer novels, which are typically hundreds of pages longer than your standard M/M book these days, and Harper’s take on werewolves in our own universe, or a near identical one, is refreshing, and dare I say realistic? Yes I know, werewolves, but still, you don’t have a hard time believing that her Hidden Wolves live in the Twin Cities and work as technical writers and custom cabinet makers. Or that they buy pastries from one of my favorite Vietnamese bakeries over on University Avenue. I will also preface this review by…

Special Delivery Book Three, TOUGH LOVE is Coming April 8th!

~Penny’s Rating: A- ~ I feel like I waited forever for this book to come out. I am so grateful to Heidi Cullinan for the ARC, because I don’t think I would have been able to take it if I had to wait all the way to April 8, 2014. For those of you who have managed to stay sane, the wait is almost over, and Tough Love will be hitting the shelves next Tuesday. *Dances happy dance* Tough Love is a nice continuation of the SD series. For me, it was like coming home and visiting old friends. It was so good to see Mitch, Sam, Randy, and Ethan (the boys) again! We get to meet Mitch’s half-brother Chenco Ortiz, (squeee!), a talented drag performer trying to make a name for herself and bad-ass kinky daddy Steve Vance. They make quite the pair, let me tell you. It’s an SD book, so of course there is plenty of drama, antics by Randy, Crabtree’s there too (the sadistic bastard), and of course they end up in Vegas, because Vegas is just as much a character in the SD series as the people themselves. The Sex: The sex is hot. HAWT….

John Goode’s Tales from Foster High Series

Penny’s Rating for the Series: A+ ~I’ve been meaning to write something about this series for a while. Since the tale of Foster High is now finished, I thought it was time. By the way, this whole post is basically going to be a love letter to author John Goode, combined with me rehashing my own coming of age, so if you want to skip it, I understand, but seriously, these books are awesome, and you should read them. I would  love to see copies of these in every junior high and high school library, because there are some kids out there that need to read this stuff. Like maybe they will not kill themselves if they read them, or maybe they’ll realize that they have the power to make things better, make a difference, change the world. It does get better. These books make me want to be better. Not magically bright and sunny, with rainbows and unicorns better, but be a better person. Expect more from myself, better. Do better. Take a stand, kick some ass, change the world, better. Not many books do that. I wish that this series had existed when I was in high school….

A DOUBLE BLIND (Special Delivery #2) Re-Release Review

By Heidi Cullinan Penny’s Rating: A Happy Valentine’s Day All! In honor of the re-release of Book 2 in the Special Delivery Series which will be hitting shelves on March 4, 2014, I thought what could be better than a V-Day review with a little kink? FYI- this review contains mature content. I first read this novel back in 2012 not long after I finished Special Delivery. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I have read this series several times and did re-read the Samahain re-issue of Double Blind, provided to me by the fabulous Heidi Cullinan herself, thank you Heidi, so I could have the story fresh in my mind for this review. Double Blind is an amazing compliment to Special Delivery. Sam and Mitch are in the story, but the focus is on Randy, who if you didn’t fall in love with him in SD#1, you will here. This is Randy’s story, and Ethan’s story as well. If you haven’t read Special Delivery, this novel does stand on its own. Still, I would recommend that you read it, because you are missing the back story. And the kink-awesomeness that is SD#1 The Characters: I love that Sam and…
