I’m so thrilled to be hosting LM Somerton! Testing Lysander is one steamy book! Thanks LM! -Penny

LM SomertonIn planning Testing Lysander I intended to come up with a thriller with a thread of romance rather than a romance with a thread of adventure. You’ll have to come up with your own opinion as to whether I succeeded, but it did make me think about what exactly makes a good thriller. Now I realized that everyone’s going to have a different opinion on this, but for me, a good thriller is a story I can’t put down, it has me biting my nails and staying up late at night, fretting about whether the characters are going to survive.

Thrillers come in many forms, but in general, the plots are scary, the characters are at great risk and the novels are constructed in a manner that makes the reader really want to turn the page. Lots of action and dramatic landscapes add to the recipe. Throw in a plot that concerns itself with life-and-death issues and a seriously malevolent antagonists and you have a formula for excitement.

I had no pretensions of writing deep social commentary, instead focusing on creating an entertaining story. It did sneak in there though. The issues facing my characters are all too real and I hope will resonate with other situations around the world. One of my favourite thrillers is John Buchan’s The Thirty-Nine Steps. In The Thirty-Nine Steps, Buchan holds up his main character, Richard Hannay, as an example to his readers of an ordinary man who puts his country’s interests before his own safety. I wanted that same theme to be apparent in Testing Lysander. Both lead characters are risk takers, in life and in love but the context of this story tests their willingness to sacrifice everything for a cause. What’s his Passion? is a good question to ask of Kyle and Brock. I think they’d say similar things… life, love and an addiction to danger.

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Extreme photographer Lysander Brock is accustomed to challenging places and situations but nothing can prepare him for the journey that his dominant lover, Kyle Dawson, takes him on.

A commission to photograph the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes becomes the cover for a dangerous mission to expose a terrorist group. Kyle and Lysander must negotiate treacherous terrain, a hazardous climb and unexplored caves to achieve their goal.

When Lysander is captured and tortured, he has no expectations of rescue. He understands that his life comes second to the mission but Kyle has no intention of leaving his beautiful, submissive lover in the hands of a madman. Kyle can deal with the intense pressure of fighting lethal enemies but the guilt of pushing Lysander into a life he never asked for is much harder to accept.

Lysander and Kyle journey together into a life of adventure, Dominance and submission, and an uncertain future.

Publisher’s Note: This book is a sequel to Picturing Lysander and is best read in order.

Excerpt from Testing Lysander:

Lupo chuckled. “The pretty man thinks we want his ass, my friends.” He jumped from the desk and moved so that he was face-to-face with Brock. Staring him in the eyes, Lupo reached between their bodies and took Brock’s limp dick in his hand. “Lupo can get all the women he wants. This is of no interest to me.” He took a step back and pulled a small glass jar from his trouser pocket. He held it up so that Brock could see the contents.

“You know what this is?”

To Brock it resembled a giant ant, dark brown with a stubby body shape.

“An ant?”

Lupo jiggled the jar, agitating the inch-long creature.

“A very special ant. This one is called the bullet ant. It is said that getting stung by one of these is like getting shot by a bullet. The pain from the sting is said to last twenty-four hours and is the most painful sting out of all the insects in the world. I have seen someone stung by one of these. He said it was like fire-walking over charcoal with a three-inch rusty nail in his heel.” He gave Brock’s balls a squeeze. “Tell me the truth and I might be persuaded not to stick the end of your cock in this jar.”

Every muscle in Brock’s body tensed as he imagined the pain to come. He clamped his mouth shut. He would not betray Kyle. Any amount of pain was preferable to giving in.

“I’ll give you some time to think about your choices, Mr. Brock.” Lupo positioned the jar on the edge of the desk and he and the other two men left the room.

Brock had absolutely no doubt that Lupo was telling the truth. Naked, feverish and hanging from chains in a Colombian hellhole, a single tear slipped down his face.

“I spill my guts and that psycho is going to use his little pet regardless. He’ll do it for the fun of it. Punishment for not speaking sooner. Well, fuck him. What’s twenty-four hours of sheer bloody agony between friends?” Talking to himself didn’t help. For the first time since his capture, Brock felt truly afraid. He longed for his knight in shining armor to burst through the door, but there was no chance of that—no chance of rescue at all. He was alone and so far up shit creek that he’d need an outboard motor rather than a paddle to get down it again.

About the Author

About LM SomertonLucinda lives in a small village in the English countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, cows and sheep. She started writing to fill time between jobs and is now firmly and unashamedly addicted.
She loves the English weather, especially the rain, and adores a thunderstorm. She loves good food, warm company and a crackling fire. She’s fascinated by the psychology of relationships, especially between men, and her stories contain some subtle (and some not so subtle) leanings towards BDSM.
