The Inconvenient Duchess – FREE on Kindle & NOOK (for now anyway)…

Penny’s Rating: C+

This is pretty good for a freebie! I haven’t ventured into historical het romance land recently, and I was pleasantly surprised.

INCONVENIENT duchessPublisher Description”Dear Cici and Father,” “I have come to Devon and married a duke. And I’m more tired and hungry than I have ever been in my life. Please let me come home.”
Compromised and wedded on the same day, Lady Miranda was fast finding married life not to her taste. A decaying manor and a secretive husband were hardly the stuff of girlish dreams. Yet every time she looked at dark, brooding Marcus Radwell, Duke of Haughleigh, she felt inexplicably compelled–and determined–to make their marriage real…

So yay! A decent free book. I did go into this with pretty low expectations. I really wasn’t expecting much, but I have to say I was surprised that this story avoided many of the stereotypical pitfalls of het historicals. I’ve gotten jaded and bitter over the years and most of the time I choke on the unrealistic virginal sex scenes and the absolutely depressing helplessness of either one or both MC’s. “I love him sooooo much, but what is I tell him/her and he/she doesn’t feel the same way?” Ugh. Of course good het historical romance avoids all of the pitfalls, but there is so much more bad historical romance out there than good, and finding something I actually like in a free story from this genre is pretty damned impressive. I’m picky, OK? So, the relationship between Miranda and Radwell is not love at first site, for one. They come to first respect each other and then fall in love. Second, it is relatively angst-free. They are not whiny! They are both proactive! Do you know how rare that is in het historical romance?

Anyway, it’s free- so yeah, go get that.
